CITY OF JEFFERSON, TEXAS

PUBLIC HEARING

TRANSPORTATION CENTER

305 E. AUSTIN STREET

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 1, 2022 @ 6:30 P.M.

 

Notice is hereby given that a Public Hearing for the City of Jefferson and the Jefferson City Council will be held on Tuesday February 1, 2022 at 6:30 PM at the Transportation Center at 305 E. Austin Street, Jefferson, Texas, at which time the subjects to be considered or upon which any formal action may be taken are as listed below.  Items do not have to be taken in the order shown on the meeting notice.  Unless removed from the consent agenda, items identified with the consent agenda will be acted on at one time.

 

AGENDA

  1. CALL TO ORDER – MAYOR
  2. WELCOME GUESTS AND VISITORS

Public Comments – Limited to citizens and business owners of the City of Jefferson, must sign up in advance on the list and must limit to 3 minutes conversation.  Jefferson City Council may ask questions but shall not discuss items that are not on the agenda.  On a subject that is not on the agenda a person may add an item to a future City Council Agenda by contacting City Hall a minimum of 5 days prior to a regular City Council Meeting

 

  1. REDISTRICTING REVIEW and COMMENTS

Pursuant to Chapter 552 of the Texas Government Code, the public is hereby given notice that the City Council of the City of Jefferson, Texas will convene in special session on the 1st day of February, 2022, at 6:45 pm to consider action related to the redistricting of the City of Jefferson Single-Member Wards.  The City Council reserves the right to take any and all appropriate actions regarding the redistricting of the City of Jefferson political boundaries, including the acceptance of new boundaries for the City wards, modification of any boundaries, and/or tabling the pending proposals for later consideration and/or action.

 

Prior to taking action, the City Council has received analysis of the existing political boundaries of the City of Jefferson, relevant documents regarding prior actions of the City Council regarding the nature and type of governance of the City, the ethnic makeup of the population of the City, and the requirement of State and Federal law regarding periodic redistricting of city boundaries to comply with the constitutional requirements as well as the statutory duties imposed upon the city by the Voting Rights Act.

 

In this regard, on January 21, 2022, the City Council took the following actions, which are hereby ratified:

 

  1. Established criteria for the purposes of redistricting, and

 

  1. Based upon an imbalance in the existing political boundaries of the City Council Single-Member Wards, ordered that the City undertake steps necessary to redistrict the three city-ward boundaries to achieve population balance under established standards, and to comply with the federal Voting Rights Act.

 

  1. Review alternative plans for the redistricting of city wards and participate in the revision of existing city ward boundaries.

 

The City Council reserves the right to take any and all appropriate actions regarding the redistricting of the City of Jefferson political boundaries, including the acceptance of new boundaries for the City wards, modification of any boundaries, and/or tabling the pending proposals for later consideration and/or action.

Polk Street, a place readily accessible to the general public at all times, on this 28th day of February, 2022, at 4:30 p.m. and remained to posted for at least 72 continuous hours preceding the scheduled time of said meeting.
